About SVFSA

Founded by survivors, for survivors — serving the Sacramento region and beyond.

Our Mission

To educate the public and support individuals affected by Valley Fever while advocating for earlier diagnosis, better treatment, prevention, and cure.

Our Story

SVFSA was founded by Thomas Earl Hall, a Valley Fever survivor living with the long-term effects of disseminated coccidioidomycosis. Since 1997, Thomas has received care from several outstanding infectious disease specialists throughout the greater Sacramento area. Through their dedication, professionalism, and compassionate support, he learned the importance of early diagnosis, effective treatment, and the strength of the survivor community.

At the time of his diagnosis, doctors determined that the Valley Fever fungus had spread to more than 75% of his body. The most severe involvement was in his spine and neck, requiring spinal fusion and the placement of Harrington rods. He also underwent intensive treatment with intravenous amphotericin B to address the widespread infection. These experiences gave Thomas firsthand insight into both the challenges and the possibilities of treatment.

Over the years, living with Valley Fever has been a profound journey of resilience. Inspired by his own struggles and the care he received, Thomas founded SVFSA to offer assistance, encouragement, and resources to others. The organization is dedicated to supporting survivors, educating communities, and advocating for better treatments — and ultimately, a cure.
